Ocean Solutions to Climate Change

Ocean-based solutions to climate change offer promising opportunities to protect and enhance the ocean's natural systems, while also providing sustainable solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The ocean and its ecosystems play a critical role in regulating the Earth's climate and absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Examples of ocean-based solutions to climate change include: marine protected areas, blue carbon (for example seagrass ecosystems that absorb and store carbon) and ocean-based renewable energy.
