The Tula Foundation’s Ocean Decade Collaborative Centre for the Northeast Pacific is pleased to announce that funding awards have been selected for the Climate Ready B.C. Seafood Program. This $1.7 million dollar fund from British Columbia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food aims to enhance understanding of Ocean Acidification and Hypoxia (OAH) in British Columbia and support the resilience of B.C.’s coastal food security.
Over the next two years, the Climate Ready B.C. Seafood Program will be delivering targeted funding across four priority program areas outlined in the B.C. OAH Action Plan:
Advancing scientific Understanding of OAH
Collaboration, knowledge transfer, awareness, and understanding related to OAH
Marine Carbon Removal Technologies
OAH Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies
Eleven proposals were selected for funding as they displayed strong alignments with program priorities, meaningful collaborations and high impact on understanding B.C. OAH. Successful proposal applicants include industry associations, research institutions, Indigenous communities and organizations, and non-profit organizations. Many successful proposals displayed strong collaborations and partnerships across stakeholders and rights holders. Projects will run from April 1, 2024 to March 31,2026.
Quotes:
We’re helping seafood producers prepare for and respond to climate change by supporting research and projects that promote the long-term health of B.C.’s oceans and the economy of our coastal communities. The continued partnership between scientists, governments and industry leaders will help ensure a strong, sustainable sector that provides people with fresh, local seafood for generations to come.
Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food
Our team at the Ocean Decade are proud to have led this initiative and excited about the range of proposals that have been selected for the Climate Ready B.C. Seafood Program. The projects selected will fill important data gaps in British Columbia while also strengthening relationships across stakeholders and rightsholders, bringing in new partners and building our shared knowledge of how the ocean is changing
