For the first time in recent memory, we’ll have the most comprehensive understanding of how biodiverse False Creek really is. Hakai Institute scientists and the False Creek Friends Society, in collaboration with the City of Vancouver and other local organizations, are conducting a scientific “BioBlitz” in Vancouver’s False Creek starting September 3nd, 2022 and running through the Labour Day weekend. The BioBlitz is being done to raise awareness of the biodiversity of this unique urban area and to provide meaningful opportunities to involve the local community in conservation activities. This event is part of the Northeast Pacific Biodiversity Action Network, a project endorsed by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

Public engagement activities include “Meet the Scientist” events, Light Trap and Sea Settlement Plate Demonstrations, a cultural tour hosted by Ocean Bridge, an amazing exhibit of underwater pictures taken in False Creek by renowned ocean photographer Fernando Lessa and narrated by False Creek Friends Society and so much more.

The main activities for public participation are scheduled from September 3 to 5, between 10am and 2pm; a great opportunity for young learners to connect to science in their community before the start of the school year.
