Coastal Zone Canada Association (CZCA) and Ocean Wise are inviting emerging artists in Grades 4 – 12 to submit their work showcasing what the coast means to them. This artwork will be prominently displayed at the CZC conference being held in Victoria, B.C. on June 11-15, 2023 to enrich the experience of conference participants.

All accepted submissions will be displayed on a contest webpage at ocean.org as well as on-site during the CZC conference in Victoria.

Submissions will be judged by panel on June 1 and winners notified via email by June 5. The top 10 selections will be highlighted at the conference and the top 5 selections will win prizes (see below).

Prizes

First place: The first place submission will win a Landyatchz longboard.

Second and Third place: Second and third place submissions will each win an Ocean Networks Canada hoodie.

Top classroom submission: The top classroom submission will win a free Ocean Wise Virtual Program on the topic of their choosing for their classroom.

Submission Guidelines

1) Artists are invited to submit an original piece of artwork including a title and description. The artwork can be new or past work that lends itself to the theme.

2)  Artists can upload a still image (JPG or PNG) of their work at the link below. The work can be developed in any medium but must be captured and submitted digitally. Video content will not be accepted.

3) Artists are asked to represent their connection with the coast in whatever form it takes for them, be it social, physical, spiritual, cultural…or something else altogether. Maybe it’s a photograph of a cherished pier, a representation of the emotions brought on by an ocean sunrise, or a drawing of shoreline teeming with life, or a sculpture depicting a treasured coastline memory.

4) A panel will review the submissions. Artwork will be judged on technical skill, creativity, and adherence to the theme.

5) Works will be disqualified for including:

  • Profanity, nudity, graphic imagery, drug use, copyrighted material or anything that wouldn’t make it into a PG13 movie.

  • Anything inflammatory/discriminatory toward marginalized groups.

  • AI-generated artworks should not be submitted.

6) Eligibility: Artists must be Canadian residents in Grades 4-12.
